Hi everyone,

I work for a company that has two office locations: one in the city and one in a suburban/regional area.

As part of my job, I am normally based in the city office, but I am required to travel to the suburban office on a regular basis. The round trip between the two offices is approximately 110 km each time.

I make this trip around 40 times per year, which means I travel approximately 4,400 km annually between these two workplaces.

My question is:

Can I claim a tax deduction for these travel expenses when lodging my individual tax return?

The travel is directly related to my employment duties and is between two work locations of the same employer, rather than between my home and work.

If it is deductible, would I need to keep a logbook or other records to substantiate the claim?

Thank you for any guidance.

Specifically allowed. You can claim

  • "travel between workplaces of your employer or between clients"

Trips you can and can't claim | Australian Taxation Office

Evidence of travel is required whether by bus, train, taxi, your own car or other type of vehicle.

What evidence of vehicle expenses depends on the vehicle (whether classed as a car or not).

Refer to the guidelines

Motor vehicle and car expenses | Australian Taxation Office

Cars only under cents/km. or logbook method. Other vehicles use actual expenses method.

Thank you for your response.

I have a follow-up question regarding substantiation requirements.

My travel between my employer’s two workplaces is likely to be close to 5,000 km per year. If the ATO were to review my claim, what evidence would be required to substantiate these trips?

My employment contract states that I have two workplaces, however it does not specify that I am required to travel between them on a weekly basis. In practice, due to operational requirements, I now travel between the two locations approximately once per week.

As this travel pattern has developed over time based on business needs rather than being specifically documented in my employment contract, I would appreciate guidance on what records or evidence I should retain to support my claim.

Thank you for your assistance.
