Hello,

I recently received a "Final Warning" letter from the ATO stating that I have overdue tax returns and that I should "lodge now".

I am a German citizen and lived in Australia from 15 August 2023 until 30 June 2024. During that time, I volunteered full-time at The Summit under a volunteer agreement.

I was not a regular employee. I received pocket money and was provided with accommodation and meals by the organization.

At the end of my stay, my organization assisted me with a tax refund of approximately AUD 700, and I believed that all of my tax obligations had been completed.

I am now living in Germany and this is the first letter regarding an outstanding tax return that I have received.

I would like to know:

– Which tax return or document is considered outstanding?

– Do I need to lodge a tax return or a non-lodgment advice?

– How can I resolve this matter while living overseas?

Thank you for your assistance.

Doesn't the letter answer your first two questions?

Lodge either by paper, online services or through a tax agent.

Lodge your tax return from outside Australia | Australian Taxation Office

Make sure you indicate this will be your final tax return on the last year due, otherwise you may find yourself in the same pickle in the future.

Hi @OdileWunsch,

The final warning letter indicates we believe you may have an outstanding lodgment obligation for the 2023-24 financial year.

Based on the info you've provided, we can't determine whether you need to lodge a tax return or a non-lodgment advice. This will depend on to help work this out. If you don't need to lodge a tax return, you should let us know by lodging a non-lodgment advice.

Where you do need to lodge a tax return, you can do this while living overseas. I'd recommend following the link @Taxduck provided.

If you're unsure which document is outstanding, you can check your ATO online account or contact us directly by phoning our overseas line or writing to us so we can discuss your specific circumstances.
