Apologies if already answered. On my Android, I now have an ATO message recommending that I load and use the ATO App. I am confused as as best I can research, MyGov is still the Government recommended method of accessing the ATO (and others). I can find no definitive answer to this. So...is the ATO going rogue and "knows better than the Government", or is the Government providing substandard service in the MyGov app? Eithe way, it seems like someone is not talking to the other.

Hi @DFK4655
There's no real answer on what app is best, it really just comes down to what you prefer. You can absolutely manage your tax affairs through the myGov app after linking it to your ATO account. But, you can also access your ATO account straight through the ATO app. Both apps offer different services, and there are benefits to both!
The main difference between the 2 are:
- myGov app = access to all Government services (like Medicare, Services Australia).
- ATO app = access to only your ATO account.
The ATO app also has tools that the myGov app doesn't. For example, the myDeductions tool, which is a record-keeping tool that makes it easier to store all your expenses throughout the year in one place. Once it's time to lodge your tax return, you can back up your expenses from the tool straight to your tax return. This eliminates the time it takes to gather receipts and manually enter them into your lodgment. Plus, it stores these records safely if you need to access them in the future. You can learn more about the ATO app and the myDeductions tool on our website.
If you don't want to clutter your device with multiple apps, you'll have to work out what's most important to you. If you only want to use the app to manage your tax and store your records, then the ATO app is what we'd suggest. But if you want to have access to other Government services, than the myGov app would be the most appropriate.
