This has happened before but for small amounts. This time Auto fill for a distribution from QAU (betashares Gold bullion) auto filled my tax return with $13000. This I knew was wrong, it should have been $6500. I rang registry (MUFG) for QAU who assured me that they gave the ATO $6500. I rang the ATO who said They received the advice $13000 and I could not change this autofill and go back to registry. I went back to registry who pleaded innocence and said they could do no more. I am being given the run around here. I managed to change $13000 to $6500 in the income tax return dispite the ATO saying it was impossible. Last year the same thing happened for a small amount of $30 so I did not bother to try to change it. I still have more distributions to come and am concerned about things happening again. I have memory issues after a head injury and this is very distressing. Is this a common problem? Last year it was also bank interest with 56 entries but only 28 slots to enter (autofill) so the result was $20,000 out. I managed to self enter $20,000 in order to get the amount right.

Hi @S.Upport,

Pre-fill data discrepancies like this are not common, but they can occur. When you see incorrect pre-filled amounts in your tax return, you can edit them to reflect the correct figures.

The pre-fill information we receive comes directly from third parties like your share registry, banks, and other financial institutions. If the registry (MUFG) states they reported $6,500 but our records show $13,000, there's a mismatch that needs to be resolved at the source.

You've done the right thing by manually correcting the amount in your tax return from $13,000 to $6,500. You can override pre-filled information when you know it's incorrect. Keep your supporting documents from the registry confirming the correct distribution amount of $6,500, as we may request evidence if we review your return.

For the bank interest issue where you had 56 entries but only 28 pre-fill slots, this can happen when you receive multiple small payments throughout the year. You correctly added the missing amount manually to ensure your total income was accurate.

The best path forward is to contact the share registry again and ask them to confirm what they actually reported to us. They can check their reporting records and, if there was an error on their end, they must correct it with us. If the issue continues with future distributions, keep detailed records of all correspondence with the registry and the correct amounts from their statements.

You can contact our individual tax line between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday to Friday if you need us to investigate specific pre-fill discrepancies. Have your tax file number and details of the incorrect pre-fill data ready when you call.
