Work cover NSW told me i couldnt make a claim because although i wholey worked in NSW but lived in QLD and company based in QLD took me app 6 months to get a layer involved who handles cross boarder cases, work cover NSW accepted my claim. During those 6 months i was on Cenyerlink payments which were paid out of my tax return that year, i then received app $47,000 back money which has now left me with this massive tax dept, i have lodged a complaint with the work cover regulator, they came back with work covers reply that they didnt decline my application because i didnt lodge one but i didnt lodge one because they told me by phone that i couldnt, the person i origonally spoke to looked for my companys name and said that company doesnt have a policy in NSW so i would have to make a claim in QLD which i couldnt do either because i worked in NSW, Work Cover NSW accepted responsibility for my illness and paid backmoney,

My question is, how can someone only receiving Work Cover payments have such a huge tax dept

Hi @Garry16,

This can be due to a number or reasons.

If you were receiving Centrelink and then got back paid for workers compensation. It may have put you into a higher tax bracket.

We have a great page that refers to why you may have a tax bill you may find helpful.

Hey @Garry16!

It sounds like, (and please, if I’m way off course, let me know) the tax bill may have risen from the combination of receiving Centrelink benefit for 6 months, and then receiving the back pay from Workcover for the same financial year, and not having paid the amount of tax required. Not paying the right amount of tax for the income and year, will see you issued with a tax debt.

When you say you received Centrelink that was paid out of your return, what do you mean?
