I was an international student until the 15 of May 2023, so for most part of the financial year 2022-2023 I had private health insurance. Then, I applied for a partner visa and I got my medicare card the 2nd of May 2023. My partner is a permanent resident and he pays for private insurance, so he doesn't pay medicare levy.

My question is... can I claim a medicare levy exemption, since I didn't have medicare for the full financial year?

Hi @priskala

You may be eligible for a part Medicare exemption for any period you were not entitled to Medicare benefits providing you meet the criteria; you’ll need to assess this.

In the period you were entitled to Medicare you may need to pay, but this will also depend on your taxable income amount. Medicare levy is not payable or can be reduced for low-income earners. If your taxable income is equal to or less than the lower threshold of $24,276. The levy will also be reduced if your taxable income is above the lower threshold but less than the upper threshold of $30,345.

You can also use the Medicare levy calculator to work out your Medicare levy payable base on your circumstances that includes taxable income and eligible exemptions.
