If I am the Permanent Resident in Australia but I still work for my company in Hong Kong, when I am moving to Australia for good, do I need to pay both HK and Australian salary tax? I know there is no double tax Agreement between HK and Australia. If I pay my salary tax to HK tax office , how can I deal with the tax to ATO? Please advise if I can apply any tax relief in Australia and how can I do? Thanks !
Hi A_Pun
Your Australian Tax Residency is different from your Permanent Resident Status.
Australian Tax residents are taxed on their worldwide income. (So any HK salary would be taxable in Australia)
There is a China - Australia DTA. (Which I assume covers Hong Kong).
I'm unfamiliar with the China Australia DTA, but the general conditions of DTA's usually result in the taxpayer getting credit for the tax paid in HK up to a maximum of the tax you are liable for in Australia. (In Effect you pay the higher of the two countries' tax rates)
