You can move out of your current home and continue to treat it as a main residence for up to 6 years. This would allow you to rent it out and not pay any capital gains on the sale when the time comes.
You can only have one main residence at a time. The moving in rule means you can treat both homes as a main residence for up to 6 months (while moving). This can only be done if the new home becomes your main residence.
If you did this, this means home A will no longer be exempt from capital gains when you sell it.
