Hi,
For some reason, despite having said my employer will pay my last PPL payment instead of Centrelink, Centrelink then paid me also for the same payment, then asked me to repay the overpayment. It was approx $3500, and I had to request my employer credit back the tax paid on this amount to me, and i had to pay the $3500 back to centrelink. This was in Jan 2023, and I've since had payment summaries from my employer and Centrelink that don't reflect my repayment of $3500.
As a result of the above, my return shows effectively $7000 of income for this payment, putting my tax bill up higher than it should be, despite only having practically received $3500. I also can't tell if the tax my employer repaid to me on that amount, is also shown as additional few hundred dollars income! Either way, my employer will not amend my income statement, which seems reasonable - from their perspective i was paid. But I don't know how to ask centrelink to amend their income statement and have little faith they would. Also not sure that's appropriate anyway.
It makes me wonder if its simpler or more appropriate to just reflect/record the repayment I've made in my tax return instead, as some sort of deduction or reduction of income. But if so, i'm not sure where/how to do this without causing myself future issues. By my simple calculations, this would be the difference between me owing several hundred dollars to the ATO vs receiving a small refund - it may not seem much but every bit helps.
Any insight or assistance would be welcome. Thanks,
