Hello there,

I was an international student in Australia years ago but I left Australia permanently. During the time I lived in Australia, I opened a Paypal account here and I am still using it now. The reason is this is an aged account and is not randomly limited by Paypal.

My question is I do some freelance jobs such as website/application development in my country and receive the payment via this Paypal account. However, I withdraw the money to local bank account in my country and pay the tax here.

Do I have any tax obligation in Australia in this situation?

Thank you.

Hi @itsjack,

So you aren't currently in Australia, but had opened the PayPal account while you were? Is that right? If you are not a resident for tax purposes of Australia, you don't reside here and the income wasn't earnt in Australia then it sounds like it isn't reportable in Australia.

You may want to reach out to PayPal and enquire about the scenario as they might have advice on transferring you PayPal account over to the international PayPal site.
