Hi, i lodged me tax return on July 16. It is still showing as Balancing Account. The effective date is August 2. How can I contact the ATO to ask what is happening? Is there a max time it can take?

Hey GGgirl,

There could be many reasons why your tax return may be delayed. It could be because:

  • We're checking information with other government agencies e.g., child support, Centrelink.
  • you have a debt with us.
  • you've been insolvent/bankrupt before
  • we're checking information provided on your tax return e.g., wages with employee, bank interest etc.
  • you've lodged more than one return at a time.

If the delay is causing you financial hardship, you may be eligible to request priority processing.
