Hi,

I am an employee who just salary packaged an EV. Up until very recently I was told by my financing company that at-home electricity couldn't be claimed but public charging station costs could. Well, I used a public station for the first time this week and made the claim but got this response, "I can confirm we have received the electricity claim submitted in your portal, however we no longer accept receipts for charging costs. Please note "THE COMPANY" now reimburse electricity based on the kilometres driven. Could you please provide the opening and closing odometer readings, along with the dates and we will reimburse you accordingly.

I have driven 1780km, and they are telling me they will reimburse me $74.76 so that would mean a cents per km rate of 4.2cents per km.

I can't find this on the ATO government website. It seems that deduction rules are changing every month. I don't know whether to believe them that this is standard practice or what to believe.

Hey @Kick8020,

That's correct the cents per KM method for an electric vehicle using the at home charging method is 4.2cents per kilometre. If you're also using a public charging station, you'll need to make a choice between which method you're going to use to claim a deduction. The at home charging costs or the commercial charging cost.

If you choose to use the commercial charging station costs, you'll need to have receipts to substantiate the claim.

Hello,

I read with interest the above question and answer. I also have an EV on a Novated Lease with my employer, and only recently became aware of my ability to claim the 4.2 cents per km for home charging. The leasing company however has denied my claim, stating that they have no direction from the ATO to appy this form of expense. Their customer service leaves alot to be desired, so I thought I'd do some digging on my own about this. Can you confirm that this can be claimed now (as of 30th October 2023), or because this is still in draft it technically can't be claimed right now? Thanks in advance, Darren.
