Hi!

  • I left Australia and returned to the UK permanently in April 2023.
  • I was a tax resident in Australia and so filed my tax return in July 2023 for the 2022/23 tax year.
  • I still have an Australian bank account which I've used to pay for some immigration admin (e.g. transferring my DASP payment). In that account I have earned interest although as a non-resident tax is withheld at the source.

My question is:

  • Will I be approached for a tax return in June/July 2024?
  • If so how do I prevent this?
  • If I can't prevent this is there a way to have my log-in authentication done via a foreign / non-Australian number? MyGovID doesn't work for me and I have to use SMS apparently.

Thanks!

Hi @xwilsons

You might still need to lodge a tax return for the 2024 financial year, do you know if you selected that No to “Will you need to lodge an Australian tax return in future years”? Because if you have then we won’t be expecting any more tax returns from you, and if not then you we will be expecting a new return.

If we’re expecting a return but you don’t need to lodge one, then you can Lodge a non-lodgment advice. As part of the non-lodgement, you can tell us that you won’t need to lodge moving forwards.

Logging into myGov may be a little trickier. Do you still have your Australian mobile number? Because if not, then you may need to create a new myGov account and download the the myGov Code Generator app to use in place of the SMS.

Hi Jacob,

Thanks for the reply!

I have already submitted my return answering 'Yes / not sure' on whether I needed to fill in a future tax return. I have now amended the 2023 tax return to now say 'No', but not sure whether it's a bit too late for that to have any effect?

In terms of lodging a non-lodgement advice, I looked through online services and couldn't see an obvious place to do that. Do I only get to do that once the tax year is complete, i.e. if I am asked to fill in a new return?

I still have my Australian mobile number, but it's now only active to allow me to log into ATO, costing me $5 each time to receive a text in the UK. If I create a new MyGov account will it still know who I am? Does it synchronise with my tax file number or something?

Thanks,

Sean
