I’m an international student for nine month. After that, I’m planning to go back to Japan. My study course is for nine month so even if I work, I don’t have to pay tax at all unless I earn more than about $1800. But when I tried to lodge the tax return, the tax rate was actually 32.5%. I think the tax rate 32.5% is applied for students who have visas for less than six months. It’s not my case. I don’t know what I should do. Could anybody help me…?

Here for nine months as a student you would be a resident for tax purposes. There will be a question on the tax return that asks if you are an Australian resident. Say yes. (It may by default be set at no as you have recently come from overseas).
