I work a second job using doordash for delivery. I currently use a bike but I think I could get more gigs if I upgraded to car. How much of the expenses related to acquiring a car would be tax deductible? Would I have to keep a logbook of deliveries vs. Personal use for tax purposes. Would interest paid on a car loan be tax deductible and since I only have a learner's permit would driving lessons with instructor be tax deductible as an educational expense related to improving my salary.

Hello @Owil,

Your situation will affect what you are able to claim.

You should take a look at the income from providing services page this give a general explanation of what you will need to declare and what you can claim. This is because there is a difference to what you can claim when you are in business earning income and you meeting the personal services income rules.

Once you know what you will be classified as you will be able to figure out what vehicle expenses you will be able to claim. The main thing about claiming is that you will have to apportion appropriately if you are using them for mixed purpose business or private.

The main problem with claiming education expenses for skills that are usable in your industry and in personal life will be how you apportion it. You should check out the self-education expenses to make sure that you meet the eligibility, and you work the amounts correctly.

Wouldn't be able to claim learning to drive expenses. This expense is used to obtain a car driver's license. Car driver's licenses are always regarded as a private expense. (even if you need to drive a car for your job)
