My new client is the holder of a Veterans Affairs Repatriation Health Card (Gold Card)

He his had this card for the last 10 years. While I was reviewing his previous tax return, I noticed that he has been paying his Medicare levy for all those years. He does not have a Medicare exemption certificate for the previous years.

My question is. how far back can I amend his tax return?  Can I also get an exemption certificate for the previous years? Do he really want this certificate to amend the tax returns ?

Thank you!!

Hi @AnjanaJogi,

They've had the card for a while then.

When it comes to the Medicare exemption statements. You would need to see if Medicare would backdate the statements that far.

To complete amendments, there is a 2-year time limit from when the NOA was issued that you can amend a tax return. If there is reason to complete an amendment outside the time limit. You can lodge an objection to the time limit and include the amendment request. They will need the statement to evidence that they were exempt.
