I am on a Student visa (Subclass 500) and my course is more than 6 months. I will be living in Australia for 2 years with a valid visa and I need a TFN number. I have an international passport, a student ID card from an Australian University, and, a bank account from Australia. I am confused between the two categories: (i) Australian residents; and (ii) Foreign passport holders, permanent migrants, and temporary visitors. Do I meet the criteria to apply for Australian residents? Or is it mandatory to apply in the second category?

Further, are there any advantages of applying for "Australian residents" category over "Foreign passport holders, permanent migrants, and temporary visitors"?

Hi @Luther

While your student visa (500) does allow you to work you must ensure you're working within your visa conditions and hours you can work. Any requirements we have don't override those conditions.

Regarding your residency status for tax purposes, you need to self-assess against the Residency test to determine if you’re a resident for tax purposes, the tool is quick and easy to use 😊.

If you meet the criteria, you’ll need to apply for a Tax file number (TFN), under Foreign passport holder, permanent migrants and temporary visitors – TFN application. It can take up to 28 days for us to process the application one received.

You will have 28 days from when you start employment to provide the TFN to each new employer you may have, or they will be required to withhold tax at the highest rate until you provide them, you’re your TFN.

Each new employer will ask you to complete a Tax file declaration form, you need to ensure you mark your residency status correctly, this will ensure your tax correctly 😀.
