Expecting to become Australian Tax Resident for the first time this tax year I recently forwarded from NAT75441-01 to claim UK tax relief. The form was returned because “the details on the request don’t match with the ATO record (residency).” I’m guessing this is because I have ticked the box on the form to say I am an Australian tax resident but my last tax return was as a UK tax resident.

What can I do? Do I have to wait until I next complete a tax return ( as an Australian tax resident) or should I be reporting separately my expected change in tax residency?

Many thanks in anticipation of your help, Tom

Hi @TomQ,

When you lodge your tax return, you'll have an opportunity to let us know if you're an Australian resident for tax purposes. It's at this point you'll be able to apply for a certificate of residency. If you are, you'll tell us about your world-wide income. It's at this point you'll be able to look at claiming what's called the foreign income tax offset. This is where you can see if you can reduce the amount of tax you pay twice.

Many thanks CaraATO, that’s really helpful. I was hoping there may be a speedier process for ensuring my tax goes where I am domiciled rather than to the uk where the state is providing me nothing! It looks like this transition will be a slow burner.

Regards, Tom
