I purchased a new EV for my company. I received two sets of bad advice:

1) The dealer provided the form and when questioned about where to put my business they said it is the only form and to use my personal CRN

2) When I asked my accountant, they advised to use my driver's licence

So now I've got a company car registered as an individual (i.e. under my name).

Is there any provision for 'whoops, I stuffed up the registration' and to transfer registration without any penalty?

What are the issues of leaving it in my name/should I be changing it? Accountant said it's all good, but still wanted to check as I wasn't impressed with the advice to use my personal CRN rather than a company CRN.

Hi @baz56,

Whoopsies!!!

You'll need to talk to the transport department within your state regarding the slip up with registration. But because it was purchased in your name, they may not allow it.

It would be best to have it registered under the business if the business is the one that purchased the vehicle. As it's purchased under your own name you won't be able to claim an instant asset write off through the business. For the business to be able to claim expenses you're going to need to keep records (similar to a logbook) of when it's used for the business.

If you can't change ownership have a chat to our technical team to see what's needed for the tax side of things to show the car is owned by the company but in your name.
