I got my 491 visa grant in April 2023 and made my first entry to Australia in March 2024 but am staying only for 3 weeks to have a look around at the schools/work etc.

I am still employed outside Australia but do not pay tax since it is a tax free country.

I will permanently move to Australia in July 2024.

Questions:

  1. At what point will I be considered to be an Australian resident for tax purposes and start filing tax returns in Australia?
  2. If I continue to work remotely in Australia earning overseas income, will that be taxable?

I’ve gone through the ATO site in detail but have been unable to determine answers to the questions above, so would appreciate your input/advice!

Many thanks!

Hi @491entrant,

It depends on your situation, but you've mentioned that you'll be moving here permanently. Living here permanently may mean you're an Australian resident for tax purposes.

Yes, your overseas income would be taxable, if you're an Australian resident for tax purposes.

Check our info about What remote working means for your tax return article. Specifically, under the heading 'I work remotely in Australia for a foreign employer - how am I taxed?'
