Dear members,


I have a question about applying for TFN and filing tax return.

Let’s say I will be arriving in Australia in Mid-June 2024 and will apply for TFN. I know that it may take up to 28 days to process the application. If I receive the TFN in July 2024, which begins the new financial year for 2024-2025.

My question is, can I still file a tax return for 2023-2024 with zero taxable income (in which I only stay for 2 weeks from Mid-June 2024) even though I receive the TFN in the next financial year? I need to obtain a notice of assessment for 2023 to 2024.

Thanks for your reply. I still have two follow-up questions if you don’t mind


I would like to know the fact that I can / should file a tax return for FY 2023-2024 is because of the 2 weeks stay from Mid-June 2024 or simply because I apply for TFN before the end of FY ?


In other words, even if I apply for TFN a few months after arriving (September 2024 for example), I can still get a notice of assessment with zero taxable income for FY 23-24 because I arrive in Australia in Mid-June 2024 (2 weeks before the next FY begins) ?

Hi could you share if this was possible? We have done the same too. Our TFN will arrive in some weeks but wanted to file for 2023-2024 tax year
