Hi,

I regularly work from home and have a study that I use exclusively for work. My employer can provide me with an office chair if I ask for one, but I find the model that they provide uncomfortable. Because of this, I bought an office chair at my own expense (it was quite expensive).

I have two questions I hope someone can help me with:

  • Can I claim my office chair as a working from home expense even though my employer offers to provide one?
  • Is there a limit to how much I can claim (noting that the chair I bought is quite a bit more expensive than the average OfficeWorks model)

My question is relevant to the 2022-23 tax year. I am aware that, because the office chair cost more than $300, I would have to claim as a depreciation, not a direct expense.

Many thanks!

Hi @nick_t

Yes, you can claim a deduction for the office chair. See our WFH deductions article for some helpful tips. You can also check our WFH decline in value page for calculation methods.

The only limit you need to consider is whether the chair has any personal use or not. If it is, you need to work out how much it's used for each. You'll only be able to claim the work amount.
