I've been advised that linking a Discretionary Investment Trust to RAM in order to appoint a tax agent must be done manually over the phone.

MyGovId has been offline for me since the 19th of April 2024 and today is the 29th of April 2024 and I still don't have access. Other colleagues have reported the same issue. It was working fine before now but regardless of that when I call the 1300 287 539 number to manually link the two, I no longer get the call back option I once had and now they just say call back later.

Not sure what to do as I can't get hold of anyone.

Hi @Jez2024,

If your myGovID is standard strength, then yes we'll need to manually link the trust to RAM over the phone.

I understand it can be difficult to get through, but please keep trying. We do want to help and get you all linked up. We're open at 8am - this can be a quieter time to get through if it's possible for you to try then.

Thanks WendyATO, MyGovID is "strong" apparently.

Trying to get through to the ATO and run a business isn't something I intend to persevere with. I've submitted an official complaint and a complaint reference number has been issued as well as a brief note of "We aim resolve it within 15 days but more likely 30 days"

Hi @Jez2024,

If you've lodged a complaint, then a complaints resolver should be in contact with you in the next 15-30 days. They'll be able to provide you with a manual link.

As @wendyATO advised we're available from 8am and this is the best time to contact us.

Glad you got somewhere in the end.

It's disappointing that the ATO created a self-serve system that they push all taxpayers to use instead of calling their call centers but have also created a step in the self-serve process that can only be completed by calling these call centers; which are not equipped with enough staff to handle the volume of client's who are trading trust with corporate trustees.

Surely the ATO know how many trusts with corporate trustees are registered trading entities and surely they could see cutting manpower in the call centers, whilst rolling out something like agent linking, would put unacceptable pressure on their staff and fracture tax payer's trust that the ATO can run itself sensibly.

Imagine having to chase your customers for payment/lodgment only to find out the customer has called you multiple times to complete a step in the convoluted self-service process that your call center was too understaffed to answer. It's just embarrassing.

@HayleyMills

Its a real mess. I'm unable to link the SMSF as well so I'm going through the whole procedure again. The accountants can't work with it, The clients can't work with it and the ATO can't manage it. My MyGovId still isn't working so I've got to wait until the ATO thinks I owe them some money and wait for them to send me a letter "Have you forgotten to lodge?"

OK so got a win with this one. After the ATO sent me snail mail "Have you forgotten to lodge?" I rang the [business area] number that was provided. Entered the ABN and some other details and got the option for a call back. I was called back within 30 minutes and the trust was linked to RAM and then they linked the agent with the agents number I provided.
