Hi all.

I just wanted to clarify something regarding a PTY LTD company I wish to start.

Firstly, I will maintain my current job and continue working for my current employer, receiving a normal wage that I will use for all my living expenses etc.

With regard to the company I want to start, initially, I plan on doing all the work myself but do not feel like I'll be able to afford to pay myself a wage on top of the business expenses. I am happy to work for free to build this company up. I just wanted to ensure there is no requirement to have me as an employee "on the books" and be paying someone a wage. I can trade and do business without paying wages until I can afford to do so?

I know I can become a sole trader but I am not interested in this so please do not suggest this.

Hello @Ms_Tess_Tickles

In short, no you don't need employees to start a company.

You can run the company solo, as long as you're happy to take on the responsibilities of:

  • director
  • public officer
  • shareholder

I know you said you're not interested, but the other option is to start your business as a sole trader and change to a company structure later on. Just a thought.
