I put my name on a music teachers website online (with the goal of teaching the flute) which led to someone reaching out to me for a lesson. I just had my first lesson with him yesterday and he paid for me it then requested an invoice because he is self employed and could claim it as an expense. So then I did some research on how invoices work because I am very new to all this and it appeared that I needed to apply for an ABN otherwise the invoice would be invalid. Then I started looking up how to apply for an ABN and there's a page about whether you're entitled to an ABN or not and if you apply for one without being entitled then I could be faced with a criminal charge! I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing, I mean I guess technically I am doing a business aren't I? To me I'm just teaching someone and they're paying me for it. I guess what I'm asking is is there anything in this question that would make me NOT eligible for and ABN? Should I apply for an ABN to send my student his invoice?

If you are not in business, you can use a Statement by a Supplier to notify why a ABN has not been quoted on your Invoice
Thank you for the responses, after looking at the government link I'm thinking I should lean towards not being in business but I'm not too sure:
-I do technically intend to repeat a "one-off" transaction since we will be having lessons every 2 weeks
-I already work so this isn't really gonna be my main source of income, and I don't plan to build a big tutoring business or anything
What would you guys consider me as? In business or not in business?
If you are providing a service with the intention to make a profit then this would be a business. The profit you make will be assessable income and should be declared on your tax return. The place to declare that would be on a business schedule attached to your tax return. If you have a student who asks for an invoice (as they are claiming it as a business expense) then an ABN would be advisable.
Ahh, that all makes sense. Thank you so much for all the help! 🙏 I feel safe applying for an ABN now.
