My research has shown that large gifts (of any amount) of cash from friends are tax free in Australia, provided that it isn't used to generate income by the receiver. However I've also seen that the max limit is $10,000 per annum. Could someone please clarify? eg. If a friend gifts me $100,000 per year, do I have to pay tax on it?

There's no tax on gifts regardless of the amount of money. The $10,000 limit may be because it can affect payments from Services Australia.
