I registered my abn and started uber eats in feb this year, have earned about 10000 dollars until now, and spent about 30% of my income for maintenance and fuel expenses. I haven't registered for any super but read about it somewhere that i need to contribute to it on my own. I dont know if its compulsory or optional and if its beneficial for any returns. I dont know if I can claim deductions for all the fuel and car maintenance, is it a refund that i'll get even if I dont have to pay any tax? I have screenshots of fuel expense from my bank statements which I can use as proof but is that all i need? Any help would be appreciated since this is my first time lodging tax return. Also is it compulsory to lodge return as I haven't earned above 18000?

Best regards

Hi @harshjain

Got some good questions here.

You'll need to lodge a tax return for any amount of business income. Even you only did uber eat deliveries for one weekend, you'd still need to lodge a tax return.

A tax return refund only comes from tax withheld. Uber eats is sole trader business income. You won't have tax withheld from that.

If you're a resident for tax purposes, you'll have access to the tax-free threshold. If taxable income is less than the tax-free threshold you won't have a tax bill.

We've got more detailed info for all this here at working for a food delivery service. There's info here to help with your deductions too.

As for super, it's not a requirement as a sole trader. You can choose to make personal contributions which' could allow for extra deductions.
