My tax estimate says I am owing $3k+ to the ATO for:

  • Other liabilities - medicare levy and private health insurance premium reduction.

My wife completed her tax return and she did not receive this message. We have gold level private health insurance, prefilled the tax return (including health insurance), and have never had this happen before in our 25 years of working within education (both middle income earner).

The only change this financial year is that I did have significant health issues resulting in hospital admissions, however, we paid the private health premium on admission.

Any suggestions?

Not enough information - could be related to combined income, or just an input error.

You need to examine all details in both tax returns and assessment notices.

Thanks. The private health care information has pre-populated in the ATO app and is the same information's return as it is mine. She has ended up with a positive estimate return, and mine has come in almost $4k 'owing' to the ATO. We have the same jobs, same salaries, same private health... We called the ATO today and they suggested we contact BUPA.
