Hi, I am on a 2 year youth mobility visa in the UK where I have been working for the last 3 months. Prior to this I was working in Australia for the first 9 months of the financial Year. I have been paying tax to the UK govt on my earnings in the UK. Do I need to declare my UK earnings when lodging my Australian tax return? If I do, what happens about the tax I've already paid? I have incurred considerable costs in order to start work in the UK including various professional memberships and insurance premiums. How do I claim these expenses? I'd be very grateful for any advice. Many thanks
Hey @DorsetOT,
Good on you for taking this opportunity!
First, you need to work out if your tax residency status has changed after leaving Australia.
If you're not an Australian tax resident anymore, you only need to report Australian sourced income to us. But if you remain an Australian resident for tax purposes, then you'd declare any income from worldwide sources.
You mentioned you've been paying tax to the UK Gov. Some good news here is that Australia has a tax treaty with the UK! This generally stops the same lot of income from being taxed by two different countries. So, if you need to report your UK income to us, you might be eligible for a foreign income tax offset.
As for the money you've spent to start work, you can claim deductions for expenses directly related to current employment. Pre-employment expenses that set you up to be ready for employment aren't tax deductible.
