Hi everyone,

I just found out you can apply for MES if you are not entitled for Medicare this year and I want to claim back the surcharge I paid for last 6 years. Do I need to apply for MES for past years?

If so, since recently I change my passport due to expiring, when I am applying for MES, do I put my old passport number or the new one?

Thanks

If you filled out your tax returns properly for the last 6 years, you shouldn’t have been charged the medical levy surcharge. You can look at your notice of assessment for each year to see if you paid it or not.

If you have made mistakes or if you need to change anything on your tax returns you need to go back and do amendments for each year.

Here are some instructions from their website how to amends a tax return

Remember, Medicare levy and Medicare levy surcharge are different things.
