Hello everyone,

My employer nominated me for permanent residency 186 after working with them for two years. I payed for the Visa Application fees to DOHA and immigration lawyer fees. My employer did not reimburse me for the money. Do I get a tax deduction on any of the payments or on both.

I need guidance please.

Hi @Securestrange,

Visa application fees and other related expenses are not deductible in your income tax return.

The costs are spent for you to be able to live in Australia. They are considered a private expense.

There is an ATO view on this issue in ATO ID 2002/208 for further information.

@ashley thanks for your response.

So I'm confused.

Where do we draw the line on permanent residency visa fees. If the employer pays everything, they are can request a tax deduction, but if the employee is made to pay, he/she is not allowed to do so and we term is as private, while in the absence of thr visa, the employee can lose his/her employment (income).
