I'm an American entering Australia on my partner's 4-year 482 VISA. However, I will be working as a remote freelancer (contractor) for a US company during this time. I know I will need to file taxes in the US but will I need to file taxes in Australia as well? I've read a little about an ABN, is that something I need to do as well? I want to make sure I'm following all the rules here. If things go well with his work and we like it here, we're hoping to apply for permanent residency after the first year. Appreciate any help!

The need for an ABN will be dictated by the employment arrangement your employer uses. But given the duration of the engagement you'll almost certainly be an Australian Resident for Tax Purposes and submit your ATO return for our financial year to 30 June before you submit your IRS return (after obtaining an extension) for the calendar year to the previous 31 December.
