On 14 June 2024, my mother was overpaid by Centrelink by just over $10 000 (they admitted that the money was for another person). This extra $10 000 was included in her Income Statement from Centrelink which means she must pay tax in the 2023-2024 year.

How does she get reimbursed for the overpayment of tax? She only received the Aged pension therefore would not normally need to complete a tax return.

Centrelink sent a request for the money to be repaid on 17 July 2024 in the new financial year which will be repaid.

Contact Centrelink to see if they will issue an amended payment summary. They should do. If so as long as the tax return hasn't been lodged then all is well. If it has been lodged then an amendment of the tax return will be required.
