Greyscale has two ETFs listed on NYSE, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), and the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC). Both are solely and passively invested in Bitcoin. Their investment objective is to reflect the value of Bitcoin held by the Trust, less expenses and other liabilities.
GBTC has been listed since 2013 and has an expense ratio of 1.5%, while BTC was only listed this week, with an expense ratio of 0.15%.
I hold GBTC with an unrealised capital gain, and I would like to sell it and buy BTC, since the expense ratio is much lower. Can I do this as a wash sale (not incurring a tax event/realising the capital gain), since they're substantially similar assets?
Could I sell my GBTC for BITB (a similar Bitcoin ETF from a Greyscale competitor - Bitwise) also, since they're substantially similar assets?
