What steps do I have to take to lodge a tax return for my 2 daughters age 10 and 12. Both were charged tax on their incentive saver accounts. I have since applied for and supplied to the bank tax file numbers for both of them but I now need to claim the tax back on their behalf. I am unclear as to whether I need to now set up MyGov accounts for both of them first
Hi @Philippa7
You don't need to set up a myGov for them. There're other ways to lodge.
It might be tricky to link to the ATO in myGov, if you do create one for them. Thats because we usually don't hold enough info about them, to be able to answer the linking questions at that age.
Lodging a paper return is usually the easiest way in this scenario.

Thankyou. I have the paper form and am having trouble following the instructions. My eldest only learnt $326.80 from interest. The bank refunded some tax but there is still $65 outstanding. I don’t understand how to fill out the under 18 section even though I have read the instructions. It doesn’t refer to interest.
I am also unsure how to fill out the Medicare and private health insurance question. They are cover by the family policy I pay for so do I just leave that blank ?
Howdy @Philippa7,
For the under 18 section, you need to report your child’s income. Since your eldest earned $326.80 from interest, here’s what you should do:
Question A1: This section is for individuals under 18 years old. You need to determine if your child falls into any special categories (e.g., working full-time, receiving a disability support pension). If none of these apply, you proceed to the next steps.
Step-by-Step:
Step 1: Write “0” at label J if your child does not have any income from employment, pensions, or other specified sources.
Step 2: Add up the income from interest ($326.80).
Step 3: Subtract any deductions related to this income (if any).
Step 4: Write the net amount at label J. This amount will be taxed at normal rates.
Medicare and Private Health Insurance
Since your child is covered by your family policy, you generally do not need to fill out separate details for them. Here’s what you should do:
Medicare Levy: If your child is covered under your family policy, you can leave this section blank or indicate that they are covered under a family policy.
Private Health Insurance: Similarly, if your child is covered under your family policy, you do not need to provide separate details for them. You can leave this section blank or indicate that they are covered under a family policy.
