Hi,

I applied for my TFN in february 2024 and am an International student. I haven't had a job yet however I applied for a TFN because i needed one in order to open a bank account in Australia. Are there tax implications/paperworks i have to do even when I do not have a job yet?

Hey @Strawberrycake8,

Although you're not earning employment income, there might be other reasons why you potentially need to lodge a tax return.

The first step is to work out your tax residency status. For example, if you're here and studying a course lasting over 6 months, you might be considered an Australian resident for tax purposes and must declare your world-wide income. Once you've worked out your residency status, you can use our Do I need to lodge tool to determine if a lodgement is needed.

If you don't need to lodge, just send us a Non-lodgment advice 🙂
