I'm fairly resilient, I've run a business for 10 years got through COVID, went through a divorce, lost my kids and started to fall behind on taxes. My long term accountant didn't help or advise they way they should have so we changed over this year. Our returns needed to lodged so went on the path of completing them. In the back of mind I knew the tax debt and the stress building with the interest. I decided to face into it and spoke to the ATO several times to update on when returns would be complete, so we could do a payment plan. I felt at ease that the ATO were ok and we had a plan. Then today my accountant told be the ATO had issued a Garnishee notice to me bank to get money. The bank where sales go into and wages come out. I rang the ATO and they confirmed a record of the conversations but had no explanation for the forceful action. Now I'm lost, don't know what to do and in a dark place. Even the ATO guy didn't know why they have done this. I need help.

Hi @stillstanding,

We understand this must be a very stressful situation, we’ll try to help and explain what's happened.

When money owed isn’t being addressed through a payment arrangement, there a few things we can do to recover the debt. A garnishee notice is one of those things.

The best way to take control of the situation would be to address any overdue lodgments you may still have. You can also reach out to our lodge and pay team to discuss entering a payment plan.

If you need more help, we’d recommend contacting the National Debt Helpline as they offer free financial counselling.
