I’m considering a 3-5 year contract to work as a nurse in Dubai. I would rent out my house in Australia while I am away, generating about $25k a year. my salary in Dubai of 11,500 dirham is tax free. I would also be paid a number of allowances.

  • am I required to pay tax in Australia on my UAE salary?
  • If so, at what level?
  • am I able to send money earned in the UAE back to Australia?
  • would I have to pay tax on allowances?
  • Does this change if I become a resident of the UAE and give up my Australian residency?

while the contract is for three years, there is a high likelihood I will stay for longer and make Dubai my home. At the moment, only plan on returning once a year.

thanks in advance for your help. Any other pertinent information would be greatly appreciated!

HI @Anniem23

Tax residency is a tricky topic.

By my view, the fact you maintain an Australian property and return once a year is enough to maintain your tax residency

You will need to declare your UAE income in Australia and pay tax at your normal marginal rate.
