My 14-year old child is starting casual work (less than 10 hours a week), and I am unsure whether:

  1. we need to apply for a Tax File Number?
  2. we need to submit a tax return in the next tax season?

I understand that any child can apply, but if they earn so little money, is there any reason to go through the motions?

  1. Yes - Employer will require all employees, of any age, to have a TFN.
  2. Best to do so, because employer must report all wages to ATO
