My wife has recently had a small pay increase that brings her over the threshold for repaying HECS (she is part time and had an increase in hours). Her employer has said that they don't do any HECS withholding and has given a number of reasons which all seem to come down to "Too hard, don't want to." She, and other staff members, are expected to make their own HECS repayments directly.

From my understanding, it should only be a change in the amount of tax withheld from pay and should be a straightforward process. Does the employer have the option not to do HECS withholding if the employee has correctly informed them of the HECS debt?

I saw that post when I searched before asking. That doesn't answer my question though. I know the HECS will still need paid at the end of the year. My question was is the employer not paying HECS when they have been informed of the HECS debt an option that is open to them?
