My accountant has advised me that I need to pay the MLS due to my income even though I :

  1. am on a 485 Visa
  2. Have medicare exemption
  3. Single
  4. No recipricol rights
  5. Maintained 485 visa for full year

I do not have full private health insurance. But others are telling me that as I dont have Medicare Levy, I should not have to pay the Surcharge. There are only part examples I can find online and nothing definitive.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi @JoJi,

If you were exempt from paying the Medicare levy, you may be exempt from the MLS too. Look for the heading Medicare levy surcharge exemption .

You'll need to get a Medicare Entitlement Statement (MES) through Services Australia so we have official notification that you're not liable when we work through your tax return. If you've already lodged your tax return, you can lodge an amendment once you've got the MES and claim the exemption then.
