Hello,

I am currently overseas. I have TSS 482 visa and I will be relocating to Australia in Jan 2025 to start my employment. I do not have and will not have any other source of earning prior to Jan 2025.

I would like to apply for TFN in advance (while overseas) so that I am sorted on this front.

a) Can I apply for TFN while overseas and under which category should it be - temporary resident or overseas?

b) If I get a TFN in Nov 2024, would I be required to file for Income tax return for 2024 (even though I will not have any source of income in year 2024).

Thank you

Hi @inquiry

Welcome to Australia 🦘

Firstly, you can apply for a TFN whilst overseas, it just depends if you're eligible. We have more info on who can apply listed on our website that you should check out. If you aren't eligible, you'll have to wait until you're in Australia and earning income.

Secondly, you can read more about working out your tax residency in our article. Which will give you all the info you need about your residency status to make applying for your TFN and lodging future tax returns much easier.

Lastly, our financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June. So, if you were to apply for a TFN now and start earning income in Jan 2025, it'll still be in the same financial year (2024-2025 FY).
