I believe GST should be calculated on the sale price rather than on the RRP. However a company I was purchasing through, calculated and charged GST based on the RRP. Is this legal?

Not legal, unless for example, your "sale price" is the RRP minus a gift card for a certain value.

GST is calculated based off the sale price. If you are operating a business and wish to claim the GST, you are only entitled to claim the GST on the sale price as well
