I moved to Australia 4 years ago for education. In my rush to get an ABN for a tutoring job, I had clicked the first link on google which was not the ABR site.
It requested some personal information including my name, DOB, address at the time, TFN and charged me some money. I shouldn't have rushed and should have done my research but it happened. Funnily enough, they did provide me with a legitimate ABN which is registered through ATO and under my account. I recently found out that I had made the mistake as my colleagues were signing up for ABN and obviously did not have to make any payments as they did it through the ABR.
Hence I wanted to inquire if I should be taking any steps to protect myself for possible future activity the 'scammer' may commit with my personal details having been compromised. Could they attempt to do something with my details and TFN?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
