I hope this message finds you well.

I have provided scholarships to international students in Grade 6, as well as to a vocational education student. I would like to know if these scholarship expenses can be declared as business expenses for tax purposes.

I appreciate your guidance on this matter.

Kind regards,

Hi @leoPagasus

Not likely I'm afraid.

The types of business expenses you can claim deductions for must relate to:

  • day-to-day operating expenses,
  • purchases of products or services for your business, and
  • certain capital expenses including costs of depreciating assets (machinery and equipment).

Since the School Scholarships don't directly relate to earning assessable income, you won't be able to claim a deduction for it. We've got more info on what you can claim for your business on our website.
