Hi all, My employer has started withholding money to pay my HELP debts since March 2024 (shown on my payslip as STSL Component). I've lodged my tax return for 2023-2024. However, I don't see any changes in my HELP debt balance. I got paid above the minimum repayment threshold. Who can I contact to clarify my repayments and HELP account balance? Thank you

Hello @uyend,

Ok, let's do this!

What your employer does is withhold extra tax to help you pay your compulsory repayments come tax time. This does not come off your loan balance as they're not repayments to your HELP loan.

They do this to, as mentioned before, help you have enough tax built up to pay off your compulsory tax time repayment and hopefully not have a to pay anything extra out of your own pocket then. 😊

Thank you for your answer. I am still very confused. So, how can I pay the HELP loan if it's not automatically deducted when I lodge my tax return? What extra step do I have to take to ensure that the extra money withheld will go to the HELP loan?
