Are you eligible to claim exemption from medicare levy if you claim to be resident for tax purpose. My accountant is trying to make me pay medicare levy and medicare levy surcharge even I have MES that I am not eligible for Medicare due to my nationality and bot being PR in Australia and for the while year I had to pay private insurance ( cant get statement I am part of that coz it is overseas visitor health cover). My previous accountant claim medicare levy exemption for me but the new one says it is impossible.
There could be other reasons. I think you should ask him why you can't claim exemption otherwise if you're unsatisfied you can see another tax agent.
You would need to check with Service Australia for the MES, which would tell you what days you are not entitled to medicare. ATO doesn't handle the administration of medicare but rather the collection of the tax. If you do get it then you should be able to claim medicare levy exemption on the days you are not entitled.

A common reason for not being eligible for an exemption this year. Single part of prior year. Now have a spouse (who is not in an exemption category) for full year.
To be eligible for an exemption you and all your dependents, including spouse, have to be exempt as well.
