My Grandfather wants to send me a monetary gift (unknown amount) however I currently receive Centerlink (employment assistance). I am a casual worker so my payments fluctuate. When I first applied for employment assistance I had to wait a certain amount of time to receive my payments due to my then current savings.

My question is, if receiving this gift, will my payments be cancelled? Go on hold again?

I understand I will not be taxed on this gift as it is not classed as income however would be taxed on CGT, correct?

Any help / advice what to do in this situation would be appreciated.

Hi @Spannah,

You'd be better placed talking to Centrelink about this and whether it will affect your payments.

We can only provide information on tax and as you've mentioned, you don't need to declare amounts you receive as a gift.
