Hi all,

I just had a quick question. I’ve recently started earning above the STSL repayment threshold, so I completed a new TFN declaration form and ticked “Yes” for question 10 regarding having a study or training support loan and sent it to my employer.

I’ve noticed that my recent pays seem a bit lighter compared to previous weeks, but I can’t see any clear breakdown or adjustment on my payslip to explain the difference. I followed up with payroll and they said they’ll look into it, but I also contacted the ATO and received a message saying I should see additional amounts withheld on my payslip marked as “STSL.”

Is this correct? I thought repayments for study loans were calculated and applied at tax time, not deducted directly from each pay. Should I expect to see a separate line item on my payslip showing the STSL amount, or is it just included in the total tax withheld?

Thanks in advance

Is this correct?

  • Yes
  • When you answered yes for Question 10, it meant the PAYG withholding now has to account for your study loan. These would be tax credits in your tax return.
  • The compulsory repayment would be calculated when you do your tax return. The extra PAYG withholding is to make up for the likely larger payable amount on your tax return.

Should I expect to see a separate line item on my payslip showing the STSL amount, or is it just included in the total tax withheld?

  • Yes and No.
  • On your payslip, typically they do name it 'STSL' for ease of understanding what the PAYG amounts are being withheld for
  • However, what is reported to ATO is the total PAYG withholding; the summary of what the PAYG withholding is for isn't given to ATO
