I have received a tax debt and the payment plan requires a minimum of $620 a fortnight. I can't afford to pay that and continue to pay my rent and live. What can I do if that is the minimum I'm allowed to pay?

Hi @beevee,
If you can't pay the required amount, there are support options you can access that will help you to address your tax debt.
The fastest way to get help from us is to call our lodge and pay team. We can talk to you about your personal circumstances and work to get a manageable payment plan in place. It may also help alleviate any concerns, once you've been able to speak to someone and get an agreement in place.
Hi, before I contact the lodge and pay team I am curious as to what they can do in my situation as I have a $6500 debt yet only have about $100 a month even less most months as leftover income not tied to essential bills. Even if I could pay $100 a month the interest on my debt would mean I will basically never pay it off. My only option is to declare bankruptcy at this stage. i struggle to talk to people on the phone, even my family, so am greatful for any info you can give on what to expect to help me. Thanks so much in advance.
Hi @Justdomeguy,
The best way is to speak with us directly. We can discuss your options and ensure there's a clear pathway moving forward. I'd recommend phoning when you have time to talk, that way you get the most out of the call.
You can authorise another person you trust, and they can speak with our lodge and pay team on your behalf.
It might also help speaking with the national debt helpline. It's a free service and you'll be talking to professional financial counselors.
